Pastor Joe L. Poe, a native of Mobile, AL, was educated in the public schools of Monroe County and graduated from Union High School. He continued his education at Delaware State University and earned a Bachelor of Theology degree from Christian Life School of Theology. He served in the US Air Force for eight years with duty assignments in Okinawa, Japan, Colorado, the Philippines and Dover, DE. It was in Okinawa he began to form a view of the world because of its diverse culture, language and history. In contrast, Colorado’s blue skies and majestic mountains were a reflection of Psalm 19:1.
In the Philippines, God began to combine all of life’s experiences into a question that all men must answer “is there a God?” Pastor Poe began to search for God in the chapel and reading the Bible. It was in Dover, DE, that Pastor Poe found the answer to his question. Calvary Baptist Church was the place of the new birth and the resolution of all of the questions about the existence of God.
With a grateful attitude and servant’s heart, he served in various positions within Calvary Baptist Church. This included Sunday School teacher, President of the Men’s Auxiliary, Chairman of the Pulpit Committee, the Deacon Board, the Christian Education Committee, and founder of the Evangelism and Community Outreach to Convalescent Homes.
In 1986, God called him to the ministry and he was licensed. In 1987, he was ordained at Calvary Baptist Church by Reverend Dr. Richard M. Avant.
Pastor Poe has held leadership positions within various Christian organizations in the Delmarva area, including 2nd Vice President for the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA), Chairman of the IMA Citywide Crusade, Executive Coordinator and Liaison for IMA’s relationship with Eugene Givers Ministries, member of the Yoke Fellows prison ministry, Bill Glass ministry team, 1st Statewide Crusade of all correctional facilities, served as Interim Pastor of Solid Rock Full Gospel Baptist Church in Dover, DE, Chairman for Social Issues with the United Baptist Convention of Delaware, and served as Assistant Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church. Currently, he is overseer for the Living Free Christian Center, Women of Purpose Ministry, and the Agape Ministry; instructor at Calvary Bible Institute and Enlightened Bible Institute Recently, he traveled to Mombassa, Kenya, and helped lead many to Christ.
